LUKE WILLMS / Writer, Director & Producer

Luke is a writer, director and producer whose work explores the intersection of finance, power, and human resilience. His directorial debut, UNBANKABLE, was the result of a seven-year journey across seven countries. Driven by a deep commitment to the story, Luke describes the film’s completion as “divine timing,” as its themes now resonate with urgent global relevance.

UNBANKABLE has received international recognition, including the Chairperson’s Award at the Zanzibar International Film Festival, an Award of Excellence from the Impact Docs Awards, and an Honourable Mention from the Los Angeles Film Awards. The film is distributed by Sherry Media Group and was released on Apple TV and On-Demand platforms across Canada, as well as on Amazon Prime Video worldwide.

Luke is currently in production on the follow-up documentary, The Mbuntu Code, which continues this journey through women-led informal finance systems within diaspora communities in Western contexts—mobilizing knowledge from the Global South into the mainstream, and translating critical, interdisciplinary research into cinematic, character-driven storytelling.

Luke holds a combined Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Global Studies and Communication Studies from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Integrated Studies from Athabasca University.
